Evidence shows that craftspeople employed natural substances such as beeswax as far back as ancient Egypt to protect and enhance the color of wood. The Egyptians also used other materials like oils and animal fats as protective layers to prevent rot and insect damage. However, these didn't impart color in the way modern stains do. This knowledge was not isolated to Egypt; similar techniques were employed in ancient China and throughout Mesopotamia.

As civilizations developed and trade routes expanded, European and Asian craftspeople began experimenting with natural dyes extracted from vegetables, berries, and bark to introduce color into wood. In Medieval Europe, wood treatment evolved as artists and carpenters started using mineral-based pigments to offer a richer range of colors and finishes. These artisans often ground rocks and minerals into a fine powder and then mixed it with oils to create rudimentary stains.

In the early Renaissance, linseed oil became prevalent, acting as a binder for pigments and a protective layer. The 17th and 18th centuries saw the exploration of other natural oils, such as walnut and tung oil, which offered different qualities of color richness and durability. Linseed oil, however, remained the backbone for most stains due to its wide availability.

The Industrial Revolution was a turning point in the history of wood staining. With the advent of new technologies, it became possible to mass-produce a diverse range of stains that offered more consistent results than their hand-mixed predecessors. Chemical advancements also created more durable stains that were easier to apply and available in a wider range of colors. This period also saw the introduction of synthetic resins, which significantly improved the durability of wood stains.
