Kitchen Ventilation Sizing

Finding the correct range hood isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Assess your cooking zones: a range, counter cooktop, built-in wall oven, etc. If your cooktop is already in place, start by measuring its width. If you buy a new stovetop, pay attention to its size–typically 3o - 36 inches wide, although available in widths of up to 48 inches or more. At a minimum, the range hood should equal the width of the stovetop, although an overhang of a few inches is acceptable.
If wall cabinets are on both sides of the stove, measure that space. Most standard hoods are 4 to 29 inches high and 18 to 22 inches deep. Whether the hood is wall or ceiling-mounted, the recommended distance between the stovetop and the bottom of the range hood is 20 to 24 inches for an electric cooktop and 24 to 30 inches for gas, allowing no more than 36 inches between the stovetop and the hood. When choosing a hood, also be aware of the space between the range hood top and the kitchen ceiling, ensuring room for the hood.

With the popularity of commercial-style ranges, you’ll need to find a hood equipped to handle the power of your range, measured in British thermal units (BTU). HVI recommends dividing your stove’s BTU rating by 100 to calculate a minimum guideline for its cubic feet per minute (CFM) rating, measuring the air volume that a fan or vent moves. Consult the hood range manufacturer or dealer for help calculating and selecting a compatible unit.
