Types of Drywall

Kuiken Brothers Company, Inc.

Drywall has evolved to cater to a variety of specific needs. Its versatility is evident in the different types available, each formulated to address distinct challenges in construction and interior design.

Standard Drywall (White Board)

Standard Drywall, or White Board, is the most common type used in homes and commercial buildings. It usually comes in white (though the back is often brown) and is a primary wall and ceiling material. Standard drywall typically comes in 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, and 5/8-inch thicknesses. Standard sizes are 4x8 feet, though larger panels are available.

Moisture & Mold Resistant Drywall (Green Board)

Summerhill Developers

This type of drywall has a green covering and special water-resistant material. While not waterproof, it's more resistant to moisture than standard drywall. It is commonly used in damp areas, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. While the core of moisture-resistant drywall is designed to prevent mold and mildew buildup, it's crucial to ensure this type is well-sealed, especially at the seams, to maximize its benefits. Green Board typically comes in 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch thicknesses. Standard sizes are 4x8 feet, though larger panels are available.

Fire-Resistant Drywall (Type-X)

Purple

Type-X drywall contains non-combustible fibers, making it more fire-resistant. The "X" stands for its fire rating, and a typical Type-X drywall offers at least a one-hour fire rating for a 5/8-inch board. Type-X is used anywhere that requires an added layer of fire protection. However, building codes often mandate its use in certain areas of homes and buildings for safety reasons.

This drywall is denser than standard boards due to the addition of fire-resistant fibers. This density also provides soundproofing, although it's not its primary function.

Abuse-Resistant Drywall

GP Gypsum

Tailored for environments where walls are subjected to more wear and tear, abuse-resistant drywall is a robust alternative to conventional drywall. This variety is designed to withstand a higher degree of impact and physical stress, making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas.

The core of abuse-resistant drywall is denser and more durable than standard types, often reinforced with fibers to increase its strength. This reinforcement helps prevent dents, scratches, and holes in less sturdy materials. While similar in appearance to standard drywall, its enhanced durability makes it slightly more expensive but a wise investment for areas prone to frequent damage. Its use can significantly reduce maintenance and repair costs, preserving walls' aesthetic and structural integrity in demanding environments.

Soundproof Drywall

QuietRock

As the name implies, this drywall type is designed to minimize noise transmission. It's constructed using a combination of layers, including wood fibers, polymers, and gypsum to dampen sound. Ideal for walls in apartments where noise can be a concern, home theaters, bedrooms, or any space where sound control is a priority. While more expensive than other drywall types, soundproof drywall offers enhanced privacy by reducing airborne and impact noise transmission. This makes it a popular choice for those living in densely populated areas or homes with close neighbors.
