
Understanding Lumens: Choose Bulb Brightness, Not Watts

The term "lumens" has become increasingly significant in the lighting world. The Department of Energy (DOE) has emphasized the importance of considering lumens rather than watts when evaluating the brightness of light bulbs. But why is this shift happening, and what does it mean for consumers?
Historically, when purchasing light bulbs, people commonly referenced wattage. Watts measure the energy a bulb uses, and with traditional incandescent bulbs, higher wattage generally meant a brighter bulb. However, with advancements in lighting technology, particularly the rise of energy-efficient bulbs like LEDs and CFLs, the amount of electricity a bulb uses (its wattage) no longer directly indicates its brightness.
This is where lumens come in. Lumens directly measure the amount of light produced by a bulb. In other words, they gauge a bulb's brightness. The greater the lumens, the brighter the light emitted by the bulb.

With this in mind, the DOE has provided guidelines to aid consumers in transitioning from the old method of choosing bulbs based on wattage to the more efficient and accurate method of lumens.
For a light equivalent to an old 100-watt incandescent bulb, look for a bulb producing about 1,600 lumens.
A 75-watt incandescent bulb typically gives off a brightness of around 1,100 lumens.
For those used to a 60-watt incandescent, a bulb outputting 800 lumens will feel familiar.
And if you're replacing a 40-watt incandescent, you'll want a bulb that produces roughly 450 lumens.
When shopping for bulbs today, rather than focusing on energy consumption (watts), it's more pertinent to consider light output (lumens). This shift ensures the desired brightness and promotes energy efficiency, as newer bulbs give more lumens per watt consumed.
